It’s all about the light…

This view will never get old. In my dark days, I try to remind myself of the beauty that surrounds me when the darkness moves in.
We lost a cherished soul this week, Theresa, she had a wonderful way about her, a smile that lit up your heart and made you feel good all over. If I can get to 91, still driving, still selling Avon, I would say she is a perfect role model to follow. Bake lots of treats and keep on truckin’:) We are so going to miss her. She lost two sons in the last few months; maybe that hurt was more than she could bear. Fly high beautiful lady- you deserve that light!

We had our first hard frost a few days back. The stairs down to the lake were white and slippery. It felt like November! I’m not sure what makes these Fall sunrises so spectacular. The shorter days, air moisture, cold air, warm water certainly make the mists!? I wait all Summer for them to start.

I took my last pre-hunting season walk on Sunday, put away my antler and bearskin hat as well;) It’s like being in jail for two weeks with the 4-wheelers and orange gun-toting OGB’s stalking the woods. Hopefully they will stay off the ridge behind the house, a wee bit too close, move along!

There are still some brilliant oak leaves in the forest. That colour blast is so welcome. I do dread the gray days at the end of the month, but I relish the amazing light coming through the trees.

The Autumn Meadowhawks were the only insects I saw, they seemed to be making the most of that last bit of warmth! Go guys! The frost had shriveled up most of the tree mushrooms, I only found the large oysters still hanging on!
I’ve been waiting for the birds…It is still so very very quiet! I haven’t seen a Fall here in 6 years with so few birds. I hope they show up soon! No Gold or Purple finches yet, I caught sight of a junco but it didn’t stick around. We do have the regulars….

These guys are a constant source of amusement! It took a while before they trusted Fang enough to steal the peanut from his mouth! I do make them work for their peanuts!

The Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers are back with the other year-round residents, White-breasted Nuthatches and Chickadees. I even caught a passing Northern Flicker! Mr. and Mrs. Red-bellied show up several times a day at the suet feeder…He is much harder to photograph, a bit shyer! A small group of Krakens, I mean Grackles, passed by as well! They will be all heading South soon with their Red-Winged Blackbird buddies. “Don’t let the door hit you in the arse!” the Blue Jays say! “Our feeders are ours again!” 😉

A Crow came and perched outside the kitchen window and it allowed me to get a few shots. They check out the compost bin every time something gets added. I hear them calling, “FOODS HERE!!!” In crow of course, I know that call! I understand some crow/raven lingo;)

I caught sight of a Hermit thrush as I walked down the road to check the mail, and out at the mailboxes, a flock of Cedar Waxwings flew silently past, not a peep from any of them as they landed in a tree by the road.

The Woodpeckers are quite vocal, along with the jays but the doves are so quiet as they poke about for leftovers on the ground!

I look forward to the influx of the LBB’s..the little Brown birds! In the meantime, I’ll get my early morning landscape sunrise fixes and raindrops on leaves and seed pods until hunting season is done!

I did spy a flock of Common Mergansers first thing this morning and we had a have a group of Buffleheads on the far side of the bay! Diving ducks! yeah! Now to wait for the otters! Those reflections of the paper birches in the calm are stunning!

The turkeys have been keeping a low profile, smart birds! Hopefully they will be back to clean up the cracked corn and not sitting in someone’s freezer…0_0!

A few mornings I didn’t make it down to the lake…I just enjoyed the view from up high! 64 steps is good exercise, though;) We’ll see what tomorrow brings! I’ll leave you with secret agent Rocket spying on chipmunks from a safe spot! Saludos amigos, breathe in the fresh fall air, embrace the ones you love and rejoice before your nostrils start to freeze shut;) Ha! Kidding, sort of;)
