Settling into Summer…Where did June go?

There are days all I crave is a landscape…I got my wish a few mornings back…colour, shadows, reflections, depth. Don’t get me wrong, I love to photograph everything, but some days…a landscape is badly needed:) But tell me, why does the sun have to come up at 5:30? Who ordered this? I guess I’ll take what I can get;)

News circulated that our Loon family had a little one so I took advantage of a flat calm morning and went for a paddle. This age shit is crap…trust me, if you’re young, go and do everything NOW! Ha! Could be operator error too, I knew I might regret a few poor decisions in my life, falling off so many horses, getting bucked off, haying until to drop, building crap out of large heavy stones, yup…the joints are not what they used to be, and I’m not talking about pot;)

This was a quiet paddle, little wind and I knew where to go and look:) It’s a small lake, thankfully! I spotted the Loons as I looked into the sun, couldn’t resist that light! Sparkles everywhere:) Baby was having a rest but soon it was back to fishing for junior! Did you know: Loons typically have one to two babies (chicks) at a time. Females usually lay a clutch of two eggs, though one-egg clutches are also common. They only produce a single brood per year, with both parents sharing the incubation and chick-rearing duties. Thank you Google.

Just one Loonlet this year. Chick? I dunno, Loonlet sounds good! Mother and Father were busy providing for their young one.

They moved around a fair bit, swimming, diving, fishing. Coming up with minnow after minnow, from very, very small, to quite large! This pair is beautiful to watch. I always keep a good distance.

Once the canoe drifted a bit too close and father makes a low growl, only way I can describe it, and I back paddled quickly. Thank you he said!

It works for me, sometimes;)

I like bubbles too Junior;) That was a doozy of a minnow, he/she managed it! I watched these beautiful birds go about feeding their little tyke for awhile and then left them to go about their day. It’s a beautiful paddle out there when it’s flat calm. I measured it out and will all my putzing around and following, it was about a 5 km paddle. Enough work out for the shoulder I decided as I headed home.

Reflections are magical this time of the day! 🙂 Makes paddling all that much easier! I use an older iphone for these shots as I ussually just take my Canon and long lens when I’m looking for Loons:)

Summer…just the start of the babies! I’ll fill you in tomorrow with them and more wondeful birds, bugs and mushrooms! Ha! Here is one of my favourites…Dead Man’s Fingers-Xylaria polymorpha..or IS that a body? Ha! You never know what could be buried out here;)
